The thing about being in an ever evolving industry, one must find a way to keep a bit on the edge while reviewing fashions. I think I might have inhaled a little more sequins fog than I can blow out, when I entertained the idea to choose one item per designer (just 4 from a section of 25) showcased at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Joburg. Trialling, but what a joy to compile.
These are designers who have created stunning/ topical garments that had me and other fellow front-rowers in conversations to date.
THULA SINDI’s SPECTACLE SPARKLE STOPPER!
Thula has been having a lot of fun with his label since the dusking of his iconic Woman Of Consequences and very season, he switches it up to optimum levels. At the end of his mod orient Autumn/ Winter 2012 collection -being the classically trained designer that he is; onlookers witnessed a beam like none. A show stopping-creation carefully wrapping up a well referenced collection. This gold floor length dress, round neckline with a cap sleeve on one and fabric forming a full sleeve cascading all the way to the floor on the other is a dream I say!
HENI’s BOW-TASTIC SIMPLICITY!
When Heni showcases at a fashion event, you best believe the rambles to follow. The “master of thrills and frills” gave us a show headlined by shock, denial, pain, guilt, anger, depression, reflection, loneliness, reconstruction, acceptance, rebellion and reincarnation elements. For most -including yours truly, the long (puffy) sleeved mini with a huge pussy-bow neck knot and statement shoulders captured most relevant trends without too much pomp-and-ceremony and that is what real fashion is about. Designs with a great chance at icon status are sometimes very clean.
CSQUARED’s DISCO CRAY VEST!
I walked out of the Csquared show hi-five-ing everyone like a mad man. A happy mad man. For the first time in a very long time a menswear collection had an equal mix of sensible excitement, classic refinery and overall timelessness. One of the many beautiful items that caught fine eyes of blags (a mob of bloggers) is the multi toned sequined vest! A sartorially mutinous piece of clothing that has definitely elevated the state of style as we know it and we are yet to see a non-committal individual.
AVANT’s SWEETEST SCALLOPING WHITENESS!
Showcasing a collection of monochromatic garments is not easy. Especially if you are a young designer. Avant apparel’s second collection was a stunning reaffirmation of the very reason we fell in love with the gals last year. As much as one would imagine the massive strength of fashion’s love affair with all black everything, it was the white corseted bodysuit and a matching Melton trench coat that opened the show we will remember for a very long time. Scalloped + strapless + belted = iconic.
