Mainly Manly Manny

It is amazing what the right combination of water, bones blood and melanin can sometimes form, almost as though some humans were created to ignite every possible amount of envy out of the rest. I’m talking here about models. Gosh, with their legs up to infinity, bodies cared for and jobs to get to wear designer gear first. *talk to the hand* I met with the 1.88m tall Manyano Mahlakata –known (to us the inner circle) as Manny, for a chat and here are a few facts about the “ordinariness” that is his life.

The dudsty streets of…?

Hails from Umtata in the Eastern Cape. Raised by a single parent and is the youngest of four children –two sisters and one brother.

He is actually quite good at sport. Growing up rugby was his first love and he played for the second team division throughout his high school career.

don’t make me hit you with my pocket…erm

Most people would be surprised to learn that he is quite a chilled guy who prefers the dance floor (mostly when with his two buddies, Herman and Alex) as much as he could stay indoors. Trust. I have seen this man move!

One can’t say that Manny is a holiday person per se, but whenever he needs to be stranger, he tries to visit Port Alfred and spend a lot of time topless on the beach. –ok I really don’t know why I said that.

Swagg has never strutted this good.

Manyano was discovered in 2009 whilst walking about during his first year at University of Johannesburg where he had registered to study a Financial Information System qualification. He was booked for his first ever casting and got to walk in two shows at the South African Fashion Week that very year. Classic Schmortzel tale…

He has since changed agencies and signed with ICE Model Management in Johannesburg and Mens Division in Cape Town and has been a part of almost every menswear designer showcase each season.

Being handpicked to feature in Ozwald Boateng’s Spring Summer 2012 campaign shot in the country last year is definitely one of Manyano’s career highlights. You don’t need me to tell you that Ozwald Boateng is beeeeeg bizniz!

He has great plans to spend sometime in the Cape later this year because in model land, summer marks the peak of season where one is exposed to a lot of local and international clientele.

out in the streets (of fashion prettydom), we call it murder!!

In addition to a demanding career on and off runways and shooting endless campaigns, Manny is also set to obtain a qualification in Marketing. Nice one… a man with a plan.

Playing a part in the fashion industry has helped to prompt a well thought sense of personal style. At the moment he is crazy about mixing retro finds with regular off-the-peg purchases and his daily -carefully considered dress up routine has gone from a record of four minutes to twenty minutes.

Some of his favourite designers brands include Naked Ape, Ephymol, House of Olѐ, Fabiani, DSquared and of course Ozwald Boateng.

This is the part where I get to break into a kind of dance that should never see beyond my front door because I got to spend a rainy afternoon with this super awesome, cool, funny, smart human over cola sodas at a hotel restaurant. Go on Manny, get to beaming!
