It is very difficult for a retailing designer to showcase at fashion week and get great responses. Ruald Rheeder®’s runway show at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg 2013 achieved all kinds of commentary from fashion people. The wide focus of the range targeted at many different types of men, kept all of us on the edges of our seats. I happened to have been sitting next to Elle SA’s Poppy Evans on my right and blogger Trevor Stuurman on my left during the show and I know they couldn’t have possibly missed my fervent enthusiasm with the emergence of every black-on-black styled outfit. I loved how Ruald played with textures across levels, from paring velvet military style mid-length coat with fitted pleather pants and rain boots to that dreamy appliquéd chiffon top. The crowd favourite was certainly the furry grey coat styled with a collard white shirt a neck tie and layered with a black mesh t-shirt. I loved the authenticity of the designer’s styling technique. He did not down play the camp bits, neither did he shy from stressing the dire need for investment pieces in every man’s wardrobe. He also served some classic lines alongside trendy shapes resulting in a product of an extrememly good quality. Every single piece in Ruald Rheeder’s collection was every bit MAN as he exists in all parts of the world. I LOVE IT!!
