Gert-Johan Coetzee and Christopher Gill 2015 GJC bursary winner (1)

Valued at the total of R180 000, Gert-Johan Coetzee’s eponymous Fashion Design Bursary is now open for applications from students enthusiastic about the next year. The decorated designer is once again on a search for an individual keen for an entry into the fashion industry.

One aspirant designer will not only have their study costs covered for the three-year internationally accredited course at the Northwest School of Design, but will also be personally mentored by Gert-Johan Coetzee, and may ultimately benefit from the brand-new fellowship programme sponsored by Brutal Fruit.

Gert-Johan says he is “looking for someone who displays real passion and an attitude that nothing will stand in their way”. These qualities must reverberate exciting talents quite like qualities possessed by last year’s winner of the bursary; Christopher Gill of Lephalale. The up-and-coming designer is currently close to completing the first year of his studies at Northwest School of Design and is already making exhilarating career moves.

Mahlatse James MJ AND STUFF Gert-Johan Coetzee Bursary (2)

I have always maintained that the fashion pie is big enough for everyone enthused and willing to deliver. So, this has me all so excited for Gert-Johan Coetzee’s mission to uncover fresh talent and invest in their education. What a grand opportunity.

MJ AND STUFF Item Of The Day Radley London Backpack

Throw me in a universe where backpacks are not a thing and watch me loosing what’s left of my mind. It keeps getting better and today my obsession is fed by Radley London’s Maltby Street backpack in retro red.

Radley London Maltby_Street bagpack MJ AND STUFF

I simply must confess though; for a person who deliberately chooses to not see the world as only black or white –even though I do love few things quite as well as that monochromatic Palse Homme check-board check blazer from a couple of seasons ago, I have been a tad too exacting with the belief that backpacks should never ever be messed with. I love all (most) types of bags and am open to newer interesting shapes and stuff, just not the legend knapsack that should be slung behind one’s shoulder blades with the (sensible) option of flinging two straps over and under one’s arms. I write this as a fashionpolitan unbiased and transformed.

Still keeping with the brand’s perfect blend of creative design, quality materials and immaculate craftsmanship; this backpack has me catching serious feelings. Straight out of the Radley London’s most recent A/W collection, the Malty Street features the supple Langton leather for a nonchalant vintage feel that only gets better with age.

Sarah-Jessica-Parker-Wearing-Jordache jeans and wolford bodysuit

My girlfriends must really, truly must count themselves insanely lucky for the crazy lengths I go through to spread smiles all over their faces. I not complaining though, I mean, if their requests are lined with my trade and I get to score a free liquid dinner on their tabs ever so often…?

Most recently, I have been on the search for the magnificently fitted bodysuit seen worn by Sarah Jessica Parker (my most favourite of humans) in newest campaign following being named the face allied with two of Jordache’s lines –Jordache Collection and the Jordache Look Collection. The incontestably desirable #IOT is known as the Pisa String Body from Wolford and judging solely by the enormous demand thus far, it is fast become a staple piece in almost every woman’s woardrobe.

A classic favourite.

GUESS BAG Spring Summer 2015 MJ AND STUFF

The anticipated Item of Today has me deep in my feelings, throwing back to a moment (not so long ago –contrary to whatever belief) right after high school, when almost every third small town female I knew within my age group took part in just about all forms of parental bribery to attain a GUESS Bag. Coveted in all manners imaginable, I would often overhear and pep-talk many a girlfriends when the desire hits hard.

Fast-forward a couple of years later and having grown in parts and gone through several brands and bags alike, I have just recently had a mini-reunion with an old friend and spent a great deal of the luncheon reminiscing about the relevance of GUESS Bag in every gal’s life story. My chum’s eyes soaked and widened when I shared with her images of the brand’s newly revealed campaign for the next summer. Shot by creative duo  and long-time GUESS collaborators, Claudia and Ralf Pülmanns and directed by Paul Marciano, CEO and Chief Creative Officer for GUESS?, Inc. the campaign features the stunning GUESS tote making a debut in a series of updated designs. Absolutely worthy to be awarded the #IOT title.

Picked because my friend gaps all sorts for it and also because I truly believe in the bag’s budding star status as something to work across generations. The paint stain floral print, the considered edge juxtaposing functionality and of course the brand’s dependable quality.

MJ Collection Tie Clip MJ AND STUFF

OMG!! Fate is literally just dealing me all things grand right now. There is a new men’s jewellery sheriff in town and I am officially obsessed. MJ Collection (Perfectly rad name. LOL) is a refreshing classification of an elegance that can cross elegant and luxe bounds seamlessly. Founded by two brothers with an undeniably sharp enthusiasm for men’s fashion, the accessories brand is dedicated to hook the South African man up with trends au fait.

As much as I have seen the rather large collection of 100% leather bracelets alongside beaded arm candy designed with semi-precious stones and Swarovski elements, some exciting lapel pins and earrings I am dying to wear, I picked this metal scissors tie clip as my Item Of Today. One of the toughest picks I have ever had to make and with such difficulty, I decided on this piece based on the reality that I only have two tie clips in my accessories cave and could do with a spirited member.

Classic, modern and stands a good chance of achieving heirloom status! I am for it.

I have managed to go through life thus far trying to explain my “abnormality” as a result of dreaming in technicolor. Truth is, I spend all the little time I have (when not creating), dreaming about bags and belts and bags and hats and bags and shoes and bags and shirts and bags and pants and bags and dresses and bags and blouses and bags and all kinds of accessories and bags and stuff. Yup, the baglady could possibly have a rival if my carrier-obsessed ways are anything to go by.  Today is all about MISSIBABA’s gorgeous Possum.

The local luxe brand stays leading in the business of serving some seriously stunning high-end game with their much-adored collections. Not running short of classic references and unassumingly casual in its design and overall appearance, the Possum is the second (of five) styles revisited by Missibaba as a commemorative endeavour to mark the label’s 10th anniversary –one is revealed every month. *insert all the glee known to mankind here*

Do mark my words; this bag might very well be the IT product for all of 2015, not only because it is literally what most fashion people speak about but also because it makes all the sense to almost every kind of person keen for a functional piece of art which stands a good chance to be present for tales across generations.

Definitely worth being awarded the #IOT2015/07/14

This here should be a regular feature on this here blog space. #DecisionMade. One will try to find an item that has me spinning round-and-round with unrestricted excitement. My reason to wake up and take on each day’s vibe, if you will.

MJ AND STUFF BLOG , Head Honcho joggers at

I am typing this whilst observing one of my favourite things to do outside of the barricades of a SALE sign. I am people-watching through my window. Surveying humans as some of them settle into an admirable routine of sorts, straight after a blissfully long Easter weekend. I cannot help but wonder about their possible wonders for their wardrobes. Particularly in this loom of what feels like a rather frosty winter season ahead –if the morning chills are anything to go by. I know, I am going crazy for some of the pieces I spotted at’s AW15 collection preview. There is a pair of Head Honcho joggers I am simply dying to get into.

Spree AW 15 Head Honcho for THE COLLECTIVE

Presumably taking lead from the much celebrated trend of injecting athletic elements into everyday wear, this pair of pants forms a key part of SPREE’s street relevant range of local designer gear aptly headlined The Collective! I was fortunate to have gushed incredibly at the collection just as it was revealed, in Cape Town, a couple days ago. Imagine the sensible next piece to have in your closet. A piece so appropriate it could even transcend seasons. The ribbed and padded detail on the knee area is a remarkable update to an item that has become a definite wardrobe staple.

... it always all in the details...

… it always all in the details…

Logically, I am dying all kinds of deaths for a pair and will stop at nothing to hook up one. Good news; you too can hook up something nice at We –the rad retailer and I- are feeling super generous and to celebrate all this awesomeness we are giving away a R500 Spree Voucher. All you need to do is drop me a comment *in the essential comments box below* and simply tell me how you would style a pair.

Can y’all feel it? Fashion in the air and the shoes and the “it”bags and everywhere else really. this week sees the first local fashion week of the year. Yep, presentations for the annual Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Jo’burg will take place in Melrose Arch from the coming Thursday, all the way to Saturday the 7th of March. According to Sizwe Nzimande, the spokesperson for African fashion International says: “At Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg 2015, our primary focus will be fostering the creative independence of talented new artists emerging from South Africa, and providing retail opportunities for these designers within a global consumer-base. We want to provide the international fashion community with a glimpse into the unique and innovative nature of African design and creativity”.

The designer line-up is all sorts of exciting thus far, with the runway presentations kick-started by the retail space darling; Khosi Nkosi sharing the catwalk with the remarkably talented KL Tsotetsi. Also, fresh on the AFI ramp, lead singer for Mafikizolo; Nhlanhla Nciza will showcase her label; NN Vintage. Personally, I am super excited (like, shakes and chorus and stuff) to be marveled by Suzaan Heyns‘ creations. especially since we have all missed her full-collections on the runway. My other favorite designer; Scalo also promises to present something magnificent.

Do make sure to follow the fashion updates direct from the frontrow, via the #MBFWJ hashtag.
