I admit that I have rattled pompoms in anticipation for the current spring season – a little bit too enthused really, so the guilt has called for me to approach that little sentiment with sharp pins ready deflate a little. Don’t get me wrong, I beam with infinite optimism, I also flirt with realism ever so often. Fact: Spring in these parts also means rain (to sustain all these greenery) and slithering chills on some evenings. I will not advice anyone to insensibly adopt layers and layers of winter fabrics, instead, I say we should all save one transitional item; the knit cardigan. I know, I know we have all been there, worn the heck out of every design known to mankind and totally over the thought of buttoning up, but we cannot avoid the fact that the cardi has become something of an investment piece –a direction similarly aimed for by the proverbial peplum *shakes head wildly*. I figure that the trick to investing in an all-round cardigan is to not move far from a traditional make; the simpler (NOTE: this varies from personality to personality) it is, the better it will be and leaves plenty opportunities to style all year round. My top nominations are definitely as shown in examples in these pics. I find it quite interesting how Buhle Seya and Andile Ncube’s style choices mildly contrast their cardigans, yet they wear them so darn well, I cannot possibly imagine any different. Andile (LEFT) communicates minimalist chic with his cable-knit charcoal and collared number over a shirt in the same colour tone and matched stove-pipe leg, whereas Buhle’s (RIGHT) well considered street edge called for an oversized grey button-up atop a black mandarin collar shirt meeting at mid-thigh hemline and an interesting choice of khaki and a safari hat. These two are definitely more than enough reason to never pack away my cardi and I suggest you do the same!
