MYVIBE: DISCOVERING THE JanSport FREEDOM

Mahlatse James MJ AND STUFF x JanSport 01

I love going on about my business –as one often does in these fashioning streets- and suddenly realise the awesomeness of my surrounding, which will of course propel me to take full advantage of a situation. Stuff a stylopolitan’s dreams are made of.  I had a moment with my JanSport® backpack, just the other day.

Mahlatse James MJ AND STUFF x JanSport 02

These pics below are an upshot of yet another one of my preferred Sunday afternoon drives with an aim to meet whatever links day to dusk so speedily. Cheesy? Methinks not.  If anything, this could very well match some other pretty cool well-run camo stories; coming together to handsomely juxtapose my street style reality. I mean, one can’t help but think about the print’s history, its utilitarian relevance and the rendering feature of a backpack stunning as it is practical.

I could have completely clashed and contrasted this print against any-and-everything to claim a heavily spirited vibe or even muted it down alongside a single tint. Instead, I thought it a good idea to step up to my JanSport® bagpack and coordinate a look that is mono-tonal in intent and not running short of details that articulate the brand’s authentic and Iconic status.

#WCW: STYLIN’ THE FUSE ACADEMY TALENT

Mahlatse James x DJ Zinhle x Previdar

You simply cannot have missed this one. Delightfully splashed across all of the interwebs and social media canals alike; it is all about DJ Zinhle’s FUSE Academy celebrating six years in the business of holding high the banner of female Disk Jocks. As part of the revels, the company thought of me as the stylist to work with for this campaign. Fitting, seeing that we have a rather wonderful relationship built over the years. I suppose one can even claim that we have come somewhere near a full circle and an opportunity to team up for something this great, was well overdue.

You don’t need me to tell you that the result is all sorts of phenomenal and as far as the Woman-Crush-Wednesday hashtag is concerned; the social media circles are widening beyond belief. The series of gorgeous images (even if I have to say so myself) was photographed by the incredibly talented Lawrence Manyapelo are published on www.previdar.com portraying FUSE Academy’s talent in the most stylish of fronts.

RED REIGNS RIGHT, RIGHT NOW!

Mahlatse James South African Bloggers MJ AND STUFF 01

I am not really here to fluctuate between favourite chromes, even thought it really is part of my job to learn and report on what is said to be “in”. Funzies in other parts. Well, right now, as fashion seems set on trying to eradicate the idea of a personal style edit; trend watchers, edufashioned humans in the know and devoted secret societies are piecing together reports suggesting connective references –control issues much? Anyway, this here I have gathered from a blatant dress-up responses, some of which were masqueraded as “last minute picks” throughout the award season. If the mother of all red carpet processions (the 87th Academy Awards) is anything to go by, the colour RED, in all its hues reigns right, right now. #ShockFactor I am for it!

Ok, my reasons could very well be said to mark several referrals really. Including shape shifting cuts; hello midi culottes! Street style relevance; see these killa PUMA kicks. And plentiful androgyny; check the box-cut retro top borrowed from the fairer sex. I have also, never not loved the excitement from styling oneself into the monochromatic trends, using pieces that have been in one’s closet for a while. Monochromatic is used rather loosely in this regard, especially if you are looking at these pics with a layman’s naked eye.

I could go on lengthily about the multi shades of red I went with here, but I shall dare not ignite confusion as spread by last week’s optical illusion frock. I am just keen to verify the charisma of red colourwashes; from, scarlet, to ruby lava, to lust worthy cranberry tints, passion bursting rosso corsas and the rusty chestnut from the chosen background here. It makes all the sense that the psychology of this colour circles around passion and confidence.

SERVED IT! PUMA SELECT x BORIS BECKER SS15

NY, Brooklyn Navy Yard

Have y’all been following the recently wrapped (and not short of topical) Australian Open?  Yeah, the tennis tournament? I have. Well, only via the Twitter streets because seriously, I have fashion missions, social interwebs and things to deal with on the daily basis. That said, I am all about paying homage to the sport sans an occasion and time to actually get to swing a racquet. Rationally; I resorted to a threads approach and right on time, as if fittingly cued; my PUMA fam happens to presently house a premium collection to match.

“…the PUMA Select Tennis Collection sees the Boris Becker OG make a welcome return as a key item amongst a full collection of rad apparel and accessories…” and boy did the bring it! The range enlivens PUMA’s eminent tennis category which ties in very well with the current fashion movement in seek for the next stage beyond the common “Sports Luxe” trend. The updated pair of Becker OG kicks, is finished in a rich leather with distinctly striking details and this makes it a definite collectors’ item.

Fun fact:  to retain the authentic roots to brand’s archived timelessness; the campaign for this SS15 collection also stars the legendary Boris Becker’s son, Noah. Becoming relevant to everyone, including a streetwear consumer and a fashion enthusiast with an ability to construct a stylish outfit using separates.

#PUMAXSOPHIACHANG: THE STUNING SEQUEL.

PUMA Sophia Chang x PUMA

I don’t know if this has anything to do with an infectious enthusiasm of new season and all but literally, everywhere I go, almost everyone I meet wants to engage in an adoration themed conversation about the #PUMAxSophiaChang collection currently available at the #PUMASelectJozi and #PUMASelectCT stores. It’s like a massive tide, I tell you. The much loved magnifier of pop culture, attitude and style with ambition has once again joined forces with PUMA for a range trailing the worthily successful #NextStartsNow collection from last year. I am lust for almost every piece in the line, not only because the “Queen of Bun” delivered yet another notable selection for the fam, but also, the fact that this time around, she created works of art for both men and women. “for a global audience” she mentioned to Elle Magazine SA in the current September 2014 issue. The theme for the collection is Brooklyn and its iconic imagery such as the Brooklyn Bridge. It is characterised by black and white pattern graphics and Chang’s signature illustrations of New York City skylines.

The Sophia Chang Track Jacket features a NYC skyline inspired all over graphic print that recurs throughout the collection. One item that eschews the print theme is the Sophia Chang Graphic Sweat. However, the ‘Brooklynite’ logo scrawled across the sweat leaves the wearer in little doubt about the themes and inspiration of the collection. Technology packed windbreakers and all-over print t-shirts complete the athletic inspired women’s apparel offering.

Anyone who can stylishly update heritage designs with a relatable twist is definitely worthy of the entire buzz.

THE MINIMALISM YOU CAN’T MISS.

PUMA x Ronnie Fieg for Dover Street Market MJ AND STUFF

There is just no way that anybody could boxify or claim to pinpoint a predictable system to the manner in which my peeps at PUMA express their aim to ascend awesome vibes. This week sees the launch of a third-time alliance with premier sneaker collaborator Ronnie Fieg to create the freshest XT-2 upgrade yet, produced exclusively for the Dover Street Market.  Fieg’s penchant for taking on iconic designs remains estimable and the new “Achromatic” collection must serve as authentication to his mastery. Y’all know I am all about the great legend that is PUMA’s XT-2 runner style sneaker.

Ronnie Fieg for Dover Street Market x PUMA MJ AND STUFF

This fresh and fittingly named shoe has me seriously wanting to shake this man’s hand because for the very first time in my life I am going crazy over a minimalist yet so steadily impactful product. I mean, being an activist of sorts for detail-mania; the concept of “no colour and no branding” could raise my brows a little, but in addition to an unquestionably chic approach, these are raging with such stunning details which instantaneously jab at my thing for statement pieces. I think I might have actually shed a tear when studying the quality led sensibility.

Carefully considered pattern changes have allowed the co-collaborators to seamlessly replace typical TPU pieces with thick premium leathers which contribute to the project’s premium feel. Intricate detailing across the shoe sees an Italian glove leather upper combined with a supple calfskin leather lining, complete with quilted detailing.

SLOW CLAP FOR THE PUMA x McQ AW14 DEBUT COLLECTION.

PUMA x McQ Debut Collection AW 2014 MJ AND STUFF

Y’all might as well go on and refer to this as PUMA Week all over the #MJandSTUFF HQ. My fam keeps escalating their awesomeness even after a successful PUMA x Brazil line throughout the World Cup. I am dedicating this week, well what’s left of it to include daily posts about the rad activities and product to hit the streets soonest. First up; the main reason to why people close to me must have been exposed to brusque gasps and untimed air-punches alongside many erratic performances from yours truly: The most recent collaborative effort between PUMA and the fab-tastic Fashion House of Alexandra McQueen. The PUMA x McQ Autumn-Winter W 2014 collection to be exact.

PUMA x McQ

Back-flips were spun (by me of course) when news of the contemporary brand that is McQ and my hommies at PUMA came out because when two great labels come together, thrills of epic proportions are bound to happen. You might have seen my fervent hint all over my facebook page a few weeks ago. True to form, the AW14 collection embodies the unmatched rebellious spirit known to best be represented by McQ and PUMA’s progressive and design-led ethos which have been nothing short of incredible for over 65 years.

The collection combines Burton’s gothic fashion styling with PUMA’s use of sports performance-inspired constructions – traditional athletic shoes are transformed by designs influenced by human anatomy, with ribcages and tendons creating cage-like styling on iconic sports trainers.

PUMA x McQ Climb Lo _357160_02_High MJ AND STUFF

I am crushing all over the collection for a couple reasons. One: all of it is insanely AH-MAZING! Two: for proving that more often than not, intelligent collaborations need not compromise on reputable aesthetics in order to come up with designs that will go down in history. Three: I have been losing sleep over the McQ Run Mid sneaker, which is originally an athletic shoe given additional structure with heavy use of PUMA’s moulded TPU, laid over premium mesh and nubuck to create a rib-cage effect.

#GQSTYLEDIARY DAY 10: A GUIDE TO REAL.

Mahlatse James Look 10

…And it is a wrap. Just like that, this marks the very last of my 10-days-long contribution as daily style diarist for GQ South Africa -such a bittersweet moment but darn it, all so tremendously awesome. Thank you to all who took time out to peek in as I selected merch from my own wardrobe to style into these diverse looks. The final day (Day 10) as seen in these pics was of course an homage to the easiness of the whole task.  I mean, when we get to the crux of it, I do what I do with a great purpose to modify conventional ways of dressing up and what better to meet that requisite than hitting the relatable nerve first?

We live in an age where hard rules are wrecked ever so often and even though I advocate parts of this impression, I am a realist. Yes, I am open to understanding that not all menfolk get to embrace many dress-up options. Here’s what I know for sure about manhood and the effort to make nice with clothing –you know, being that I too am one: comfort reigns above all else. Regrettably, this has a sad tendency to surrender an interest in looking good. The only advice I would give is to ALWAYS consider bringing in hints of personality. Easy as that.

Halfway through the #GQStyleDiary feature and I’m feeling all things greenish. Take what you my for the pigment’s symbolism, all I really aimed for, was a sensible update to the nature related colour I picked among my few favourites for winter 2014. The result is a very clear indication of the nucleus at which my current sartorial journey set off. Functional and oh so spirited.

WELCOME TO THE PUMA FAM AXWELL

Axwell Hedfors Joins PUMA

Behold; an awesome report here comes: The massively talented global dance sensation Axwell Hedfors joins the PUMA kraal as the brand’s most recent European Lifestyle ambassador. Y’all can’t act fresh about this one; “Ax” (coz we’re cool like that) is one third of the prosperous Swedish House Mafia trio –pardon the tautology- and this rad relationship means that he will appear in the Retail Lifestyle campaign for PUMA throughout Spring-Summer 2014 –photographed by renowned photographer; Kenneth Cappello. * I am seriously bumping to Lose My Mind right now* Talk about such a magnificent addition to his rapidly growing universal success. In addition to this gig, which will see Axwell as a prominent feature at PUMA events and social media campaigns all the way through 2014, he has announced a string of headline festival shows alongside an array of artists including Outkast, the incomparable Kanye West and The Killers with fellow Swedish House Mafia member; Sebastian Ingrosso as their new projects prepares to hit the runway. You better believe that I intend to often keep up with his fashion missions whilst on the job. Of course I’ll keep you in the know too.
